Root Canals in Anchorage and Wasilla Alaska

Root Canal Therapy is used to try and save a tooth when that tooth has become infected or abscessed. A tooth can become abscessed due to deep decay, a cracked or broken tooth or some type of trauma to the tooth. The only alternative to Root Canal Therapy is to have the tooth extracted completely.
The Root Canal Procedure
When you are being prepped for Root Canal Therapy, you will be ‘numbed’ just as you would if you were having a filling. The unhealthy nerve is then removed and medication is placed in the tooth to treat the bacterial abscess (infection). Once the infection is removed and treated, a filling will be placed in the roots to seal the area where the unhealthy nerves once were.
Giving the Tooth Strength
Root Canal Therapy causes the tooth to become much more brittle. This requires a crown to be placed over the tooth in order to give it sufficient strength. The tooth is then cared for in the same way as other natural teeth, with proper brushing and flossing several times daily, and regular visits to your Anchorage or Wasilla dentist for regular preventative dental check-ups.
State-Of-The-Art Root Canal Therapy
Root Canal Therapy is performed much differently today than it was just a few years ago. Before, dentists used primitive ‘touch or feel’ methods spanned across five or six appointments. These days, Root Canals can be done painlessly, faster and more accurately due to the new dental technology available.
Non-Surgical Root Canal Therapy
Root Canal Therapy uses a local anesthetic and involves the removal of the nerve inside the tooth due to infection or irreversible damage. This is typically caused by the entry of bacteria into the center most part of the tooth known as the dental pulp (nerve).
Root Canal Retreatment
Root Canal Retreatment is necessary when bacteria have re-entered the tooth. This is typically due to decay or untreated canal areas. You may experience swelling or pain when chewing and some never experience symptoms at all. But an X-ray will reveal if there is a problem with a tooth that has previously undergone Root Canal Therapy.
The Root Canal Retreatment Procedure
You will be ‘numbed’ for the retreatment procedure and the canal system will then be reopened in order to remove the previous root canal material. Your Anchorage or Wasilla dentist may remove a crown and the entire post and core material may be removed, as well. Sometimes, your dentist will make a small hole in the existing restoration and will work through that opening. The canals will then be thoroughly cleans and shaped.
